A charming example of a process that underlies all development: mastery through action and agency in interaction with others. The child rejects his goal (to learn chess), but participates on her terms (for the candy). Ultimately, reinforced by intermittent successes, she identifies with him: his desire becomes hers, but now she feels it as her own.

Human-AI comparisons often omit the importance of "the other", but humans are born immaturely, with long dependence on others for survival: all development moves from external to internal, from dialogue to monologue.
